St Ursula’s College Yeppoon has been selected as a wildcard team for the Origin Energy Vicki Wilson Championships 2021.
The team will compete on the 4 and 5th of August at Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Cup.
They are making the trip down from Yeppoon, a coastal town eight hours away from Brisbane.
The championship is named in honour of Queensland and Australian netball great Vicki Wilson. The Origin Energy Vicki Wilson Cup is the premier netball competition for high schools across Queensland.
Run by Netball Queensland and endorsed by Queensland School Sport, the competition is split into two divisions, the Shield (grade seven to nine) and Cup (grade 10 to 12), with preliminary rounds played across each school sport region to determine the top 20 schools eligible to contest the finals series.
Laura Rathgeber, Competitions and Game Innovations Manager at Netball QLD, said the inclusions of the extra teams added excitement.
“We are really excited for our wildcard teams to make the trip down and compete at a competitive level at the Vicki Wilson Championship,” she said.
“It will be a great two days for all schools involved.”
Netball Queensland is really excited to see a rural team travel the distance to compete at a high level of netball.
Head Coach of St Ursula’s College, Kira-Lee Nicol, said her team was confident of making the most of the chance to compete.
“The team is ecstatic and grateful to be given the opportunity to play in the Vicki Wilson finals as a wildcard,” she said.
“They cannot wait to grab this opportunity with both hands.”
The coach mentioned she had observed the athletes grow dramatically from 2020, when she took on the St Ursula’s QUISSN Diamond Netball team.
Though unfortunately due to COVID-19, it did not allow them to compete.
Like many other many other teams, the players continued to engage in their fitness, home netball programs and skype sessions to stay connected and develop their skills and abilities.
