Featuring names such as former captain Peta Stephens and 2011 premiership winner Kierra Trompf, the Firebirds Masters will line up in the Open Women’s community division at the inaugural SCNI – being held at Nissan Arena from February 28 to March 2.
Firebird No.53 Katie Walker helped bring the idea to life after hearing about the formation of the new competition and says the team won’t just be hitting the court to make up the numbers.
“We all accept we aren’t what we used to be but we’ll be competitive because that’s just in our nature,” Walker said.
“Everyone loved the idea when it was suggested among us ex-players, whether they were thinking of playing or not.
“Each former Firebird that will play in the SCNI this year has their own unique reasons for wanting to be a part and we are all extremely excited to be getting back on court together once again.
“The event will also give us a great chance to enjoy a laugh or two off the court and take in what will be a true celebration of netball across the weekend.”
To be eligible to join the Firebirds Masters, players had to have played for the Queensland Firebirds and played their last Suncorp Super Netball-level game for any team in 2020 or earlier.
It’s not too late for you to join the Firebirds Masters at the Sunshine Challenge Netball Invitational with spots still available in the Open Women’s, Men’s and Under-18 Women’s (ages 15-18) community divisions.
The deadline for registrations is Friday, January 17 so make sure you don't miss out and sign your team up today.
The event will also feature an elite Premier Women’s invitational division showcasing some of the best State League teams from across the country while SCNI participants will also enjoy exclusive access to a Queensland Firebirds pre-season match against a Suncorp Super Netball opponent on the Friday night.
