For the first time in Vicki Wilson finals series history, a First Nations team will compete in both the Cup (Years 10-12) and Shield (Years 7-9) categories.
The Origin Energy Vicki Wilson Championship and Boys Open, which delivers a premier netball competition for secondary schools across Queensland, is scheduled for August 6-7 at Nissan Arena.
The Deadly Choices First Nations teams have received a wildcard entry to compete against the state’s strongest school-based teams and be crowned state champions.
Deadly Choices coordinator and Deadly Choices First Nations assistant coach Brendon Cook said the introduction of the First Nations teams to the competition was inspired by Netball Queensland’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
“What we want is our communities to be represented, communities from all over Queensland, and a safe space for our athletes,” Cook said.
“If we can break down barriers on how people think, as well as develop so that instead of having two First Nations professionals in Suncorp Super Netball we have one in each team, that would be magnificent.”
Cook said the selection process was exceptionally thorough, and took place over a series of months.
“We want to expose as many First Nations players as possible to this level,” he said.
“We had over 100 girls put in an expression of interest for the two teams, with well over half of those trialing at Nissan Arena. It’s been an exhaustive process.”
There are plans for a First Nations boys team to compete in the Boys Open within the next few years, with the Boys Open competition still in its infancy.
“Netball Queensland is committed to developing First Nations representation in netball and ensuring that each step of our pathway is strong and has accessible opportunities for everyone within our community,” Netball Queensland General Manager - Netball, Glenn Dennis said.
“The Vicki Wilson Championship is not only an important competition for netballers looking to progress their playing career, but an incredible opportunity to participate in a challenging and rewarding environment at the home of netball in Queensland, Nissan Arena.”
