The Queensland First Nations team will represent the state at the inaugural tournament at the State Netball Centre in Parkville, Naarm (Melbourne) in Victoria from Friday to Sunday.
All eight states and territories will be competing at the three-day tournament but for Head Coach Sharon Finnan-White the event means more than just what will happen on the court.
“This tournament is a landmark moment,” the former Queensland Firebird and Australian Diamond said.
“It’s not just about playing netball and being recognised for higher honours - it’s about representing our people, our culture, and our communities.
“To be part of this event as the inaugural Queensland Head Coach is a huge honour and for me personally, it represents over two decades of advocacy and resilience of our First Nations pioneers who have paved the way for this event to come to fruition.”
To prepare for the event, Queensland has focused on forging strong connections among the players and staff, engaging in yarning circles and team-building exercises as well as their on-court activities.
The team also spent time with Noongar woman and Australian Diamond Donnell Wallam, who shared stories with the group as well as providing guidance alongside Finnan-White.
“This experience goes beyond sport,” Finnan-White said.
“Being part of something so significant gives our athletes the chance to develop not only their skills, but their identity as strong, proud First Nations women. The connections they’ve built will last long after the final whistle.
“Our team is eager and motivated, ready to represent their state and showcase their talent and strength of their connections at this historic event.”
