The Flames, who headed into the weekend with just one win from six matches so far this season, endured a tough start to the weekend as they were beaten by the Monarchs 69-33 in the opening clash at Mackay Multisport Stadium.
But the Cairns-based franchise bounced back later on Saturday with a 50-45 win over the Capricorn Claws with a run of seven unanswered goals at the start of the fourth quarter putting the Flames into a lead they didn't relinquish.
In Sunday's game against table-topping North Queensland United, the Flames pulled off an upset win, again overcoming a three-quarter time deficit to finish with a wet sail and take the points with a 51-49 triumph with Ella Sheppard's two-point shots proving crucial.
The Monarchs, who claimed three wins from three in Round 2 in Townsville, had their winning run ended with a two-point loss to United on Saturday afternoon despite holding a 10-point lead going into the final minutes of the game.
United racking up 12 unanswered points in the final five minutes of the match to snatch a 52-50 win but the hosts rebounded on Sunday with a 54-45 win over the Claws that lifted them above their opponents into second on the ladder.
The Claws were the only team not to get a win over the weekend, sharing the spoils in a 58-all draw with United on Saturday before their defeats to the Flames and Monarchs in their other matches.
United retain top spot heading into the final round of the competition in Cairns on August 2 and 3, two points clear of the Monarchs with five wins and a draw from their nine matches.
The Claws are two points behind the Monarchs in third place while the Flames remain last on the ladder with 12 points but have the chance to build on their back-to-back wins in Mackay when the competition moves to their home base next month.
