The inaugural Welcome Sports Festival kicking off from 6 - 7 March aims to connect newly arrived families and locals through the transformative power of community sport.
Multicultural Australia teamed up with the Australian Government and Welcome Sports to give children and young adults an opportunity to try their hand at AFL, Netball, Football and Tennis in a fun and inclusive environment.
The weekend-long festival will allow Brisbane and Toowoomba locals to connect with sporting clubs and communities in their area, and experience cultural food and music, as well as access to Queensland Government’s Fair Play Sport Vouchers for families and youth.
“Sport is a fun way to stay healthy and active, but it also connects communities and provides opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to meet, play and share experiences,” said Christine Castley, CEO of Multicultural Australia.
“This will be an exciting event and we encourage everyone to attend and engage in community sport as we continue to welcome diverse communities to Queensland.”
The Festival will also launch the Connecting Through Sport program, a free four-week sports training program that will introduce new families to multisport within their local area and provide participants with an avenue to progress natural talent.
Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark expressed her pride in a partnership that speaks directly to the game’s inclusive foundations.
“Netball rose on the backs of passionate changemakers fighting for inclusion and equality and their legacy remains a driving force in the growth of our sport,” Clark said.
“We are proud to join this important partnership with Multicultural Australia and provide opportunities for more Queenslanders to discover and play our game, as we work together to continue to transform lives through netball.”
