Netball Queensland has made the difficult decision to postpone the Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup until 2021.
Originally scheduled for the weekend of 12-13 September, the Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup is a Netball Queensland initiative open to all primary schools in Queensland for students in years four to six.
The competition will now be pushed back until next year, with a date to be advised.
Netball Queensland’s General Manager of Venues, Events, Competitions and Commercial, Ben Mannion, said the decision was based purely on indicative registration numbers.
“With just a month remaining before the scheduled start of the competition we’ve had less than a third of the registrations from last year’s event,” Mannion said.
“There’s been a large volume of work to ensure the Primary Schools Cup would be delivered in a manner that would ensure the health and safety of participants, but we understand the uncertainty in previous months has impacted on a school’s ability to plan ahead.”
The two-day event provides an opportunity for girls and boys to come together and experience competitive netball in a fun and safe environment, with an overall state champion crowned at the end of the tournament.
Mannion reiterated Netball Queensland’s commitment to the competition and its return in 2021.

“The Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup is an important part of our pathway for aspiring athletes, with school-based netball a valuable part of their development.”
“We will work closely with the school netball community to ensure the competition returns in earnest in 2021.”
The decision to postpone the Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup will have no bearing on any other Netball Queensland event scheduled for the remainder of the year.
