The Redlands Netball Association favourite was one of the most popular winners at the gala function at Hilton Brisbane, as his amazing commitment and passion to the sport was deservingly honoured.
Clarke has been umpiring since the 1970s when his daughters were playing and has held numerous positions at Redlands Netball Association since becoming a member of the Blues Union Netball Club in 1999.
Now 86, Clarke was still a regular on the court with his walking frame through the 2023 season, training and mentoring young umpires.
Having been the Redlands Umpires Convenor for almost 10 years, Clarke also represented the association at various carnivals including State Age during his time in the sport.
“When Michael’s name was announced as the winner of the award it was immediately apparent how beloved and respected he is by the entire netball community,” Netball Queensland Chief Executive Kate Davies said.
“His commitment, passion and dedication to the sport are clear for all to see and it was wonderful to see such a deserving person being recognised.
“I’m sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Michael accepted his prize and to have Maya Thorne – our Sprit of Netball Youth award winner – who is also from Redlands, assist Michael to the stage was a particularly touching moment for all who attended.”
While Clarke has made the decision to retire from his umpiring commitments with Redlands due to increasing difficulties with travel, his contribution to the community will endure.
Member for Redlands and Parliamentary Friends of Netball Co-Chair, Kim Richards MP, was among several to nominate Clarke for the award, highlighting his impact within the netball family and beyond.
“Michael has demonstrated his incredible commitment to netball in our Redlands community for over two decades and more than five decades to the sport itself,” Richards said.
“He is extremely worthy of this recognition for his commitment, passion and love of netball.”
