Peter Speaight doesn’t want to just work in netball – he wants to promote it, grow it, and make it one of the most inclusive sports.
As a community development officer with Netball Queensland the 32-year-old will spend plenty of his time facilitating Sporting Schools programs at both primary and secondary level.
Though there is a key focus for the South African-born former teach aid.
“My main goal is to grow the participation in netball for people with a disability across South East Queensland,” Speaight explained.
“This includes mainstream schools, special schools and disability services.
“I also would like to create an inclusion league or social competition for participants with a disability or special needs.
“And I will support the Gems Team program helping with team training and getting ready for nationals.”
Since joining Netball Queensland in June, Speaight has hit the ground running and already shown why he was successful in his application.
However, the Annerley local said he felt he still has plenty to learn about netball – a sport which had plenty of upside that enticed him join.
“I have quite a good understanding of sport in general but not solidly in the sport of netball,” he admitted.
“I have a lot of skills which will be transferable but looking forward to getting to know netball and landscape it sits on.
“I was interested in netball as a sport as it is a growing sport across the state. I am also interested in netball as it has a large participation base and keen to work with that grassroots level. And the role seems very diverse and interesting.”
With an obviously love for all sports topped by a Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) from Griffith University, Speight’s involvement in netball looks exciting for the future of the sport.
