At 74 years young, Lyn Newport stands as an iconic figure within the Bundaberg Netball Association (BNA) and Queensland’s netball community.
With an incredible 62-year association with BNA, Lyn's dedication to the growth, development, and delivery of netball is nothing short of remarkable.
Beginning her netball journey as a Nipper at age 11, she has since evolved into a mentor, coach, umpire, and leader whose influence has shaped generations of players.
Lyn founded the Alloway Netball Club in 1974, where she has served as President for 50 continuous years and her unwavering commitment to the club has ensured its growth and success.
Beyond her leadership, she has been a player, representative, coach, and umpire tester, impacting countless players and officials throughout her career.
Known for her humility, Lyn’s mantra remains simple: "As long as they continue playing netball in Bundaberg, I’m happy."
Her deep-rooted belief in the spirit of sport shines through, as she supports players’ decisions to switch clubs without hesitation. Her love for netball extends far beyond the court, with her home dedicated to Alloway memorabilia, and her family immersed in the sport, with her granddaughters now playing and umpiring.
Lyn's contributions extend into the wider Bundaberg community, from managing Endeavour House for adults with disabilities to organising local primary school competitions. Her remarkable energy and empathy continue to inspire, making her a deserving finalist for the 2024 Spirit of Netball Award.
